Africa’s TVET Transformation Gains Momentum as UNESCO-UNEVOC BILT Bridging Event Focuses on Industry Partnerships and Innovation

Africa’s TVET Systems Move Towards Industry-Led and Innovation-Driven Training
Technical and vocational education and training systems across Africa are undergoing a major transformation as countries respond to changing labour market needs, emerging technologies and new qualification frameworks. With industries demanding future-ready skills, TVET institutions are increasingly focusing on work-based learning, digital skills, green skills, flexible credentials and closer engagement with employers.
These priorities are at the centre of the UNESCO-UNEVOC BILT Bridging Event on advancing TVET through industry partnerships and innovation, being held from 19 to 21 May in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The event brings together global and regional stakeholders to discuss how sustainable industry partnerships can support high-quality, employment-oriented and innovation-led TVET programmes.
The conference comes at a time when African countries are strengthening vocational education systems to improve employability, support youth transitions into the labour market and align training programmes with the needs of fast-changing economies.
Focus on Sustainable TVET–Industry Partnerships
One of the key themes of the event is the need to build strong and sustainable partnerships between TVET institutions and industries. Such partnerships are increasingly seen as essential for designing and delivering training programmes that are relevant, practical and aligned with real workplace requirements.
Participants at the BILT Bridging Event are expected to exchange practical insights on how to co-design, deliver and scale work-based and innovation-driven TVET programmes in collaboration with employers. The event also provides a platform for peer learning across regions, allowing stakeholders to share models that have successfully connected training institutions with industries, regulators, social partners and digital ecosystem players.
Through these discussions, the event aims to strengthen the link between classroom-based learning and workplace-based skills development, ensuring that learners are better prepared for quality jobs and emerging occupations.
Digital Skills, Green Skills and AI-Enabled Learning in Focus
As technology continues to reshape employment patterns, the event also highlights the growing importance of digital and green skills in TVET systems. Training providers are being encouraged to integrate new-age competencies into vocational pathways, including artificial intelligence-enabled teaching, digital learning tools, modern assessment models and flexible micro-credential pathways.
Green skills are also becoming a key priority as economies move towards sustainability, renewable energy, climate-resilient industries and environmentally responsible production systems. For TVET institutions, this means updating curricula, training trainers and developing practical learning environments that reflect the changing demands of industries.
The event will also showcase innovative practices in areas such as micro-credentials, AI-enabled teaching and assessment, new industry partnership models and flexible learning pathways that can improve access, quality and relevance in vocational education.
Aligned with African and Global TVET Priorities
The UNESCO-UNEVOC BILT Bridging Event is closely linked to broader continental and global TVET priorities. The discussions are connected to the African Continental TVET Strategy 2025–2034, which aims to strengthen vocational education systems across the continent, and the UNESCO Strategy for TVET 2022–2029, which promotes skills development for employment, decent work, entrepreneurship and lifelong learning.
By aligning regional experiences with global TVET frameworks, the event seeks to support policy dialogue, institutional innovation and stronger cooperation among stakeholders. It also aims to help countries and institutions identify the enabling conditions required for effective TVET-industry collaboration.
Key Objectives of the Event
The BILT Bridging Event is designed to serve as a platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange and practical collaboration. Its key objectives include examining the conditions required for sustainable TVET-industry partnerships, facilitating cross-regional peer learning and showcasing innovative models for programme design and delivery.
The event also aims to strengthen collaboration among UNEVOC Centres and enhance cooperation with employers, regulators, social partners, digital ecosystem partners and international organizations. Another expected outcome is the development of a discussion paper featuring insights, case studies and recommendations for innovative TVET programme design and delivery in partnership with industry.
Towards a Global TVET Agenda
The BILT Bridging Events are part of UNESCO-UNEVOC’s Innovation and Excellence in TVET project and contribute to the broader initiative titled “Towards a Global TVET Agenda”. This multilateral initiative is led by the German Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and coordinated by the German Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training.
Through this initiative, UNESCO-UNEVOC and its partners aim to strengthen international cooperation and promote innovation in technical and vocational education systems. The focus is not only on policy development but also on practical implementation models that can improve training quality, industry relevance and learner outcomes.
Why It Matters for the Future of Skills
For Africa and other regions, the transformation of TVET is becoming increasingly important in the context of youth employment, industrial development, digital transformation and climate action. Stronger TVET-industry partnerships can help ensure that training programmes remain responsive to market needs and that learners acquire skills that are directly linked to employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
As countries continue to reform their vocational education systems, the UNESCO-UNEVOC BILT Bridging Event provides an important platform to discuss how innovation, industry collaboration and future-ready skills can shape the next phase of TVET development.
The event reinforces a clear message: TVET systems must become more flexible, industry-connected and innovation-driven to prepare learners for the future of work.
