New Delhi, May 27, 2026: In a major step towards strengthening inclusive higher education, the Delhi Government has announced plans to set up a dedicated hostel facility for female college students with disabilities in Timarpur, North Delhi. The proposed hostel will be developed by the Department of Social Welfare and will have a capacity to accommodate 96 students.

The initiative aims to provide a safe, accessible and supportive residential environment for women with disabilities pursuing higher education in Delhi. Officials said the facility is designed to encourage more women with disabilities to continue their studies by reducing financial, mobility and accommodation-related barriers.

According to the available details, the hostel was initially announced in September 2025 for visually impaired college girls. However, the government has now expanded the scope of the project to include female students from all 21 categories of disabilities recognised under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. This expansion reflects a wider policy approach towards inclusive disability support and equal access to education.

The hostel will provide free boarding and lodging facilities to eligible female students studying in colleges, universities and recognised educational institutions across Delhi. The facility will be developed in line with accessibility and barrier-free norms and is expected to include disability-friendly infrastructure and support services for residents.

Officials said the initiative is particularly important for students from economically weaker backgrounds or those coming from distant areas, who often face additional challenges in continuing higher education due to lack of accessible accommodation, safety concerns and financial constraints.

The proposed hostel is expected to play a key role in improving participation of women with disabilities in higher education. By creating a residential facility that combines safety, accessibility and institutional support, the government aims to promote independence, confidence and social inclusion among students.

For many students with disabilities, access to education is not limited to admission in institutions alone. Transportation, safe housing, assistive infrastructure, financial support and social acceptance also determine whether they can successfully continue their education. The Timarpur hostel initiative addresses some of these critical barriers by providing a structured residential support system.

The decision to extend the hostel facility beyond visually impaired students to all recognised disability categories is significant. It indicates a broader understanding that women with disabilities face layered challenges in education, including mobility barriers, financial pressure, lack of accessible hostels and concerns related to safety.
