Cambodia is intensifying its focus on technical and vocational education and training as a major pathway for youth employment, income generation and national workforce development, with the country set to observe the 9th National Technical and Vocational Education and Training Day on June 15, 2026, in Siem Reap.
The national event will be held under the theme “TVET Provides Skills, Jobs and Income”, reflecting the Royal Government of Cambodia’s growing emphasis on developing high-quality human capital equipped with practical and professional competencies.
Prime Minister Hun Manet has urged ministries, institutions, sub-national administrations, parents, guardians and relevant stakeholders to actively support the successful organisation of the event and strengthen public awareness around technical and vocational education.
The TVET Day celebration aligns with Cambodia’s Pentagonal Strategy – Phase I, which places “human being” as the first key priority of national development. The focus is on building a skilled, productive and employable workforce capable of supporting industrial growth, domestic production and sustainable economic development.
Government Calls for Wider Participation in TVET
In a circular issued ahead of the event, Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, Phnom Penh administration, provincial administrations, ministries and related institutions to work together in promoting the national TVET agenda.
He emphasised the importance of supporting the government’s priority vocational and technical skills training programme for 1.5 million youth from poor and vulnerable families, as well as workers from both formal and informal sectors.
The Prime Minister also called for broad awareness campaigns to encourage more young people to enroll in vocational training programmes. Parents, guardians and stakeholders have been encouraged to motivate youth to join and complete TVET courses that can help them access employment and income-generating opportunities.
Siem Reap to Host National TVET Day 2026
The Siem Reap Provincial Administration, in collaboration with relevant government departments and institutions, is preparing to host the national event in mid-June 2026.
The event is expected to promote skills development, employment opportunities and income generation for students, youth, local workers and returning migrant workers. It will also serve as a platform to connect job seekers with training institutions, employers and private sector partners.
Siem Reap Deputy Governor Dy Rado said the initiative is designed to raise awareness about the importance of technical and vocational education while linking young people with job and training opportunities.
According to him, the event will help strengthen cooperation between TVET institutions and the private sector, expand access to internships and employment, and showcase the skills and achievements of trainees and local workers.
TVET 1.5M Programme Supporting Vulnerable Youth
Cambodia’s TVET push is closely linked with the government’s wider effort to provide vocational and technical skills training to 1.5 million young people, particularly those from poor and vulnerable families.
According to the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, approximately 270,000 youths have benefited from the TVET 1.5M programme from its launch in 2024 through the first quarter of 2026.
The programme aims to equip youth with market-relevant skills that can help them access decent employment, improve income levels and support their families. It also seeks to provide skill-building opportunities to workers in the informal economy and those seeking to upgrade their capabilities for changing labour market demands.
Strengthening Human Capital and Local Industry
Cambodia’s renewed focus on TVET comes at a time when the country is seeking to strengthen domestic economic growth through human capital investment, local production and industry-linked skills development.
The National TVET Day is expected to highlight the role of vocational training in supporting employability, entrepreneurship, industrial competitiveness and inclusive growth.
By promoting technical education and practical training, Cambodia aims to ensure that young people are better prepared for emerging jobs, new technologies and industry requirements.
Cambodia Expands International TVET Cooperation
Alongside national efforts, Cambodia is also expanding international cooperation in vocational training.
Recently, three Cambodian and Chinese institutions signed an agreement to promote vocational training collaboration in new energy vehicle technologies. The agreement involved a Guangxi-based college, the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia and the Preah Kossamak Polytechnic Institute.
The partnership focuses on improving vocational capacity in automotive and emerging vehicle technologies through technical training, human resource exchanges, joint curriculum development and closer cooperation between institutions and enterprises.
This collaboration is expected to support Cambodia’s workforce transition towards future-oriented industries and help local workers build skills in new and evolving technical sectors.
TVET as a Pathway to Jobs and Income
The 9th National TVET Day will reinforce the message that vocational education is not only an academic or training pathway but also a practical route to employment, income and improved livelihoods.
For Cambodia, TVET is becoming central to the national agenda for youth empowerment, workforce readiness, poverty reduction and economic resilience.
With strong government backing, private sector engagement and international cooperation, Cambodia’s TVET ecosystem is expected to play a larger role in preparing young people for skilled employment and supporting the country’s long-term development goals.
